Installing 5/8-inch Type X drywall on ceilings requires mechanical assistance due to the weight of the material. A drywall lift holds the sheet firmly against the ceiling joists, allowing for precise positioning and gaps of less than 1/8 inch at the wall intersections. Position the lift so the sheet runs perpendicular to the joists, which helps flatten any minor inconsistencies in the wood framing.
Ceiling sheets require a stricter fastening schedule than walls to prevent sagging. Space screws every 12 inches along the joists, or every 10 inches if not using construction adhesive. Driving the screw deep enough to dimple the paper without breaking it is critical; a broken paper face loses its holding power, eventually leading to "pop-outs." For maximum durability, apply a bead of drywall adhesive to the center of each joist before raising the sheet.
